Update - 05/01/2021

Statement issued by Tom Vinall, Centre Manager at 0930 on 05/01/2021

Dear Members & Users,

The new national lockdown in England means that all facilities at ARC are closed with immediate effect until further notice. I’ve set out below what this means for the various sessions, subscriptions and services that we offer. During this period the majority of our staff will be furloughed but I will be available for some limited hours to respond to emails/voicemails so if you have any questions please send them my way by replying to this email or calling me on 07799796315.

Memberships (Premium, Tennis, Badminton, Basic & Junior Packages)
Over the past 10 months ARC has been kept alive by the generosity of its members who have continued to support us through multiple periods of full & partial closure. During this new 2021 lockdown we would kindly once again ask members to continue to pay their subscriptions during this period if they are able to do so. Your support is hugely appreciated and will help us to continue to provide our fantastic community facilities well into the future. We do of course appreciate that for many members this will be a hugely uncertain and challenging time and are therefore once again offering the opportunity to ‘pause’ your membership during this period of closure. If you would like to pause your subscription then please contact us to request this. Please do not cancel your direct debit as this will create further work for both you and us when you want to re-activate.

Junior Boost Direct Debits (Kids Coaching Membership)
All junior boost kids coaching direct debits will be ‘paused’ for the duration of our period of closure with weekly sessions not taking place. As all January direct debit payments have already been charged, this amount will be kept as credit to be used for the first full month that sessions are back running again after the lockdown.

Court Bookings
All court bookings made for the comings weeks will be cancelled with any pre-paid court fees refunded in due course.

Adult Termly Coaching Courses (Adult Improver, Adult Intermediate)
All termly adult courses currently mid-term will continue as soon as permitted to do so by restrictions for the remaining pre-paid number of sessions.

Drop In Coaching Courses (Practice & Play, Cardio Tennis, Tots Tennis etc)
All drop-in coaching sessions will be cancelled with any pre-paid session fees refunded in due course.

Block Bookings
Any pre-paid and upcoming block bookings will be kept as credit to be re-booked once current restrictions are lifted.

If you have any questions on any of the above, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes to you all at this difficult time.

UPDATE - 02/12/2021

Dear Members & Users,

Happy New Year to you all.

Court Booking
Sadly 2021 seems to have brought with it further restrictions on what you can and can’t do at ARC in the coming weeks. Please read the attached updated ‘Covid Secure Site User Guide’ for specific details of what the new Tier 3 restrictions permit you to do. The main change from Tier 2 is that now all indoor sport (Indoor Tennis, Badminton & Table Tennis) is limited to same household/ support bubble only. If you’re playing with someone outside of your own household, you must play outside. As previously exceptions remain in place for U18 & Disability group activity which can continue indoors.

Fitness Sessions
Thanks to those of you who had booked a place on our new fitness sessions in partnership with G4 Gym. Sadly these are not permitted under Tier 3 restrictions and will therefore be postponed. Anyone who had booked a space will be contacted in due course to arrange a refund.

Further information on all of the above will be included in our January newsletter in the coming days.

I’ll hope to see you all back playing at the centre in whatever way you can very soon.

Kind Regards,

Tom Vinall

UPDATE - 01/12/2020

Dear Members & Users,

Im emailing you to confirm that the full facility at ARC will be re-opening from 9.30am on Thursday 3rd December 2020. Whilst all facilities will be open to some extent, new Tier 2 restrictions for Devon have been introduced setting out what you can and can’t do in each sport.

Before booking a session or court please take a look at our ‘Covid Secure User Guide’ which sets out the individual restrictions and our new site layout.

I’m also delighted to announce that our brand new car park and Indoor Viewing platform will be open to member & users from Thursday also. This means that you’ll no longer need to park on the road and will now enter the building from a different door directly onto the indoor viewing platform – again, please see the updated ‘Covid-Secure User Guide’ for details on this and a map.

The staff team will be returning from tomorrow so if you have any specific queries about carried over bookings, coaching courses or anything else please give us a call or email tomorrow.

We’ll look forward to welcoming you all back to the centre in the next few days.

Kind Regards,

Tom Vinall

Update - 02/11/2020

Statement Issued by Tom Vinall, Centre Manager & Head Coach at 1.00pm on 02/11/2020

Dear Members of the ARC Community,

Its with heavy heart that I inform you that due to the latest lockdown measures announced by the government over the weekend the entire facility at ARC will be closed to all members & users from this Thursday 5th November 2020 until further notice. If you have a current membership with us or have an upcoming booked court or session I’ve outlined the relevant details and messages below:

Memberships
During the last lockdown ARC was in essence saved by the generosity and support of the majority of loyal members who continued to pay their subscriptions throughout closure. Such is the situation that we must again repeat this request. If you are able to we would kindly ask that you continue to pay your membership subscription through the month of November in order to help us remain financially stable and cover our ongoing overheads and costs. We fully appreciate however that for some people this may simply not be possible or financially viable and will therefore once again offer the possibility of ‘pausing’ your subscription until the centre is able to re-open. We would kindly ask that members utilise the ‘pause’ option rather than cancelling their direct debit manually as it saves us a considerable administration time if and when you want to re-activate your package. If you would like to ‘pause’ your subscription, please contact us.

Court Bookings
All upcoming paid court bookings from 05/11/20 onwards will be credited and contacted with details of how to reuse this booking once the centre re-opens. Any block bookers will be contacted with available options for the rescheduling of their block booking.

Junior Boost Coaching Sessions
All planned junior boost sessions will take place Monday – Wednesday this week. From Thursday 5th November sessions will no longer be able to take place. We will therefore ‘pause’ all Junior Boost direct debit subscriptions for the entire month of November with the intention of continuing sessions from December 2nd if permitted. If your November payment has already been collected (or instructed to your bank) we will keep this as credit for December and simply skip your December payment in its place.

Termly Coaching Sessions
All planned adult coaching sessions such as Improvers and Intermediate’s will take place Monday – Wednesday this week. For those who have pre-paid upfront for the term of 7 sessions all remaining sessions will be credited and re-scheduled to resume as soon as we are able after the lockdown period.

Drop-In Coaching Sessions
All planned drop-in coaching sessions such as Practice & Play & Cardio Tennis will take place Monday – Wednesday this week. All other upcoming sessions in November will be cancelled and refunded automatically.

Member Club Play Sessions
All planned member club play and team training sessions will take place Monday – Wednesday this week.

We are aware that the LTA are currently lobbying the government to allow 1:1 outdoor tennis between different households as an exception to the lockdown closures – at this time the government has not responded and as such we are proceeding with a full facility closure unless instructed otherwise in the coming days.

We would ask that all of our incredible members & users please respect the new lockdown measures in order to allow us all to hopefully safely return to ARC in a month’s time.

Stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives.

If you have any questions at all during this period please feel free to contact me using the details below.

UPDATE - 25/09/20

TO VIEW OUR LATEST COVID-SECURE SITE USER GUIDE CLICK HERE.

Dear Members & Players,

Most of you will be aware of the latest update in government guidance around the ‘rule of 6’ now relating to indoor team sports.

Whilst Tennis or Badminton are not considered to be indoor team sports per say, the latest changes will affect any organised sessions taking place indoors involving adults. Both the LTA and Badminton England have updated their guidance and I have outlined the key change below:

  • Organised sessions for adults which follow Covid-Secure guidelines and take place indoors may continue in groups of up to 15 – however players should be divided into sub-groups of 6 or less within the session. These sub-groups must not mix during the session but coaches can move between the groups.

The following examples all remain unchanged:

  • Organised sessions for children which follow Covid-Secure guidelines and take place indoors may continue in groups of up to 15 with full mixing permitted.

  • Organised sessions for children and adults which follow Covid-Secure guidelines and take place outdoors may continue in groups of up to 15 for both children & adults with full mixing permitted.

  • For informal social play, adults & children must not attend the centre in groups any larger than 6 players.

NHS COVID-19 APP

For those of you who have downloaded the NHS Covid-19 track & trace app you’ll notice that at all court entry points we are now displaying our own unique NHS QR code. On arrival at the centre please open the app and use the QR scanner to scan our QR code. This will assist with government track & trace and immediately notify you if you may have come into contact with a confirmed case of Covid-19.

If you haven’t downloaded the app to your smartphone yet you can do so here.

if you have any questions or concerns about any of the above please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards,

UPDATE - 01/06/20

Statement issued by Tom Vinall, Centre Manager & Head Coach, at 1900 on 01/06/2020

Dear Members,

I’m pleased to announce that from tomorrow Tuesday 2nd June 2020 we will be opening more of our Outdoor Tennis courts and making some changes to the restrictions we already had in place in conjunction with updated guidance from the LTA and the government. I’d also like to say a massive thankyou to the 130 members who took the time to complete our survey on opening additional courts – you’re opinion really does matter to us and it’s helped us to shape this next phase of re-opening.

Please see the updated court user guide (changes highlighted in red). Please do make sure you take a look at this document before playing as we have made some changes to the site layout in terms of entrances and exits. Please also note that from today the gate padlock codes have changed so please remember to check your booking confirmation email before playing (those with bookings made before today should have received a code update email).

I have also detailed the main changes below:

  • 5 Outdoor Tennis courts available to be booked at staggered timings

  • Court 6 is now a ‘shielded court’, separated from the other courts and accessible via its own protected entrance route around the Indoor Tennis & Badminton hall. We have created this ‘shielded court’ based on feedback from those who were uncomfortable or unable to play side by side with others for shielding reasons. We’d ask that members avoid booking this court where possible to leave it free for those who wish to play in a more protected environment.

  • Doubles play is now permitted for up to 4 people who live in the same or different households.

  • The booking restrictions that had been put in place to limit Basic, Tennis & Badminton members to 2 booking slots every 7 days have now been removed. This may be reviewed again if we feel it necessary to do so in the coming weeks.

We’d like to ask all members to respect other users of the centre and ensure they strictly follow the guidance provided at all times around 2 metre social distancing and the marking and touching of tennis balls.

Finally I’d just like to say how amazing its been to see so many of you using the courts safely over the past few weeks. You’re continued support has helped ARC to survive this very challenging period and we’re looking forward to seeing you at the centre more and more as we continue to re-open more of our facilities, services and sessions in the coming weeks and months.

As ever, if you have any questions, suggestions or comments please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Best Wishes,

Tom Vinall

Update 14/05/2020

Statement issued by Tom Vinall, Centre Manager & Head Coach, at 1630 on 14/05/2020.

I’m pleased to announce that as a result of the lifting of certain restrictions in England from Wednesday we are now able to open 3 of our outdoor tennis courts in a limited way from tomorrow Friday 15/05/2020. The courts will be open for singles court bookings only (with some exceptions detailed below). Group coaching & social club play sessions will not be returning at this stage.

In order to make outdoor court use as safe as possible for both you and others we have put in place strict measures to ensure we are adhering to government guidelines around social distancing and hygiene.

Before considering booking a court I’d ask that you read our ‘Outdoor Tennis at ARC During Lockdown’ user guide which sets out exactly how we will be running for the foreseeable future and what restrictions will be in place. I also recommend you read the LTA’s ‘Guidance for Tennis Players’.

Whilst I am now working, the remainder of our staff remain furloughed and I am working from home meaning that the site will often be unmanned. I should be available on my mobile or email however if you have any questions or concerns.

I have taken the liberty of answering a few potential FAQ’s below but if you have any other specific questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Booking Your Court – You can book your court via the normal ClubSpark booking sheet which can be access here.

New Tennis Balls – New Tennis balls can be ordered at least 24 hours in advance of your visit here.

1:1 Coaching Lessons – 1:1 Tennis coaching sessions will now be permitted with ARC Approved Coaches as long as they strictly adhere to the LTA’s ‘Guidance for Tennis Coaches’ around social distancing. As the coaches deliver 1:1’s on a self-employed basis it will be a personal decision for each coach as to whether they choose to resume to offer this service at this stage. To see which of our coaches usually offer individual lessons and their contact details click here.

Badminton Members – Whilst the Badminton courts remain closed we have made the Outdoor Tennis Courts free of charge to all paying Badminton members to use as they wish.

Paused Subscriptions – If you opted to pause your membership subscription at the start of April and would now like to un-pause it so that you are able to play again please reply to this email and let me know. I’ll then be able to easily reactivate your subscription and ClubSpark membership profile.

Non-Member Fees -  Non-Member fees will still be payable for each non-member you play with on a court booked in your name (£3.00 per adult, £1.00 per child). Please place these fees into the ARC post box next to the temp clubhouse when you play.

Spectating – This is  to be discouraged. Only people who are participating should attend ARC.

I’m looking forward to welcoming you all back to the centre in due course.

UPDATE - 03/04/20

Statement issued specifically to members of ARC by Centre Manager Tom Vinall at 1600 on 03/04/20

Dear Members,

I wanted to write to you all regarding your ARC membership subscription over the coming weeks and give you an update on the current financial situation for ARC and the measures we are taking to try to ensure the future of the centre.

As you hopefully already know, ARC is run as a not for profit charity. During this period of closure and uncertainty we like many other businesses are facing significant financial challenges. Whilst our employed staff have all been furloughed as part of the government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme we still face significant costs as a business. After furloughing all staff and cutting any unnecessary costs we are still left with monthly outgoings of close to £2000 – these costs include backdated business rates, floodlight maintenance contract, insurance, IT costs, electricity standing charge, phone bills and bank fees.

As well as facing significant loss of profits from cancelled events such as our annual Tennis tournament and coaching programme we will unfortunately also not qualify for any of the government SME grants as our ratable value is above £51k. We have however been busy this week applying for several business interruption grants for the leisure sector provided by Sport England and others.

We would therefore like to say a huge thank you to all those members who have continued to pay their monthly subscription despite the centre being closed. During this extremely uncertain time we would ask that if you are able to, you continue to pay your membership subscription through this period to support ARC and help us to continue to offer our fantastic facilities and services after the Covid-19 lockdown period has ended.

We do of course realise that for many of our members this may also be an extremely difficult time financially. In recognition of this we are offering the option to pause your membership subscription temporarily, meaning that no payment will be taken until the centre has re-opened. If you would like to pause your subscription please contact me via email and I’ll be happy to arrange this for you. Pausing rather than cancelling your membership will be far simpler for both you and us when the time comes to re-open.

Please rest assured that the centre will re-open immediately as soon as Government advice allows us to do so.

The whole team here at ARC would like to send you our warmest wishes and sympathies at this difficult and uncertain time.

If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me – we’ll hope to see you all back on the courts raring to go whenever circumstance allows.

Kind Regards

Tom Vinall
Centre Manager & Head Coach

UPDATE - 23/03/20

Statement Issued By Tom Vinall Centre Manager at 2130 23.03.20

ARC Closed with Immediate Effect - After the prime ministers latest announcement this evening I regret that we now have no choice but to close all of the facilities at Atlantic Racquet Centre until further notice and with immediate effect. This will include the Outside Tennis courts as well as the already closed Indoor Tennis & Badminton courts. It has been fantastic to see so many of you safely using the outdoor Tennis courts over the last few days and whilst we realise that this closure will be disappointing for many of our members and users, as an organisation committed to improving and maintaining the health & wellbeing of our whole community we are proud to be doing our part in the concerted national effort against the spread of Covid-19.

I will of course keep you all updated and let you know as soon as we are able to reopen. In the meantime please follow the government advise: stay at home and exercise alone or with other members of your household only.

Best Wishes to you all at this difficult time,

Tom Vinall
Centre Manager & Head Coach
Atlantic Racquet Centre

UPDATE 2 - 20/03/20

Statement Issued by Tom Vinall Centre Manager at 20:30 on 20/03/20

Indoor Tennis & Badminton Closure – Following the Governments latest measure this evening stating that ‘all indoor leisure and sports facilities’ must close after today’s trading I regret to announce that both the Indoor Tennis courts and Badminton courts at ARC will be closed until further notice.

Outdoor Tennis Courts Remain Open – Due to the government’s advice being clear that these closures affect only indoor facilities I’m pleased to say that the outdoor tennis courts will remain open for the time being. The outdoor courts will be available for booking for both members and non-members from 7am – 7pm 7 days a week, from 7pm – 10pm they will be available to members only. Please note the following when booking outdoor courts:

  • From tomorrow all outdoor courts will be locked shut using the gate padlocks. To gain access to the courts please check your booking confirmation or member welcome pack for the codes.

  • Though all members will be able to book past 7pm only those with a temporary clubhouse key will be able to access the floodlight control panel. Unfortunately if nobody in your game has a key you willcurrently be unable to play past 7pm.

  • To reflect the change in bookable facilities the outdoor courts have now been moved to the start of the booking sheet in place of the indoor courts. Please note this changed layout to avoid confusion.

  • An equipment hire chest with rackets, balls and hand sanitiser inside will be placed on the decking outside the temp clubhouse from tomorrow.

Badminton Members – Whilst the Badminton facilities are closed we have given our Badminton members FREE access to the outdoor Tennis courts in consolation. Though not ideal we hope that these members will be able to enjoy keeping active whilst trying a new racquet sport or by attempting outdoor Badminton (depending on the wind!) – If you’d like to borrow an outdoor Badminton net please contact me.

Existing Indoor Tennis or Badminton Bookings – Anyone with an existing Indoor Tennis or Badminton paid booking including block bookings will be contacted directly this week to discuss alternative options.

Individual Lessons –  As stated in my earlier update today our core coaches will be offering both 1-to-1 and 1-to-2 individual lessons on outdoor tennis courts whilst still permitted to do so. Lessons can be booked and arranged by contacting the coach directly. For more information, pricing and contact details click here.

Whilst these will be difficult times for everyone across our community we hope to continue to support the health & wellbeing of all of our members and users by continuing to run our outdoor facilities. We would just ask in return that you continue to support us as much as is reasonably possible and that you follow the government’s advice on good hygiene, social distancing and self-isolation where appropriate.

20/03/20 - Update

Update Issued by Tom Vinall Centre Manager 13:40 on 20/03/20

New LTA & Government Guidance – Tennis ‘safe to play’ - The Department of Culture, Media and Sport has specifically advised the LTA that ‘tennis is in fact one of the best examples of social distancing in practice, and so should be encouraged as long as the guidance permits’. Tennis is also specifically identified as currently being a sport that is ok to play in this BBC news article. Guidance with regard to advised social distancing measures (defined by Public Health England as spending no more than 15 minutes and not within a 2-metre distance talking to someone) is provided on the Government website: Government advice: Social Distancing

You can read the full LTA guidance to venues here.

Individual Tennis & Badminton Lessons – Whilst the group coaching programme will stop from Saturday onwards our excellent team of coaches will still be offering Individual lessons Both (1-to-1 and 1-to-2) throughout this period whilst government advice still allows them to do so.  With their usual coaching hours all cancelled the team should have lots of availability to allow as many of you as possible to keep playing and keep accessing coaching during the Covid-19 period. We’re aware that individual lessons can be expensive – if you’re worried about the cost we recommend sharing a lesson with somebody as a 1-to-2 to half the cost. Lessons can be booked and arranged by contacting the coach directly. For more information, pricing and contact details click here.

Extra Court Availability – As a result of the mass cancellation of the majority of our racquets programme and its knock-on effect on staff hours I am pleased to announce that we have been able to increase our court booking availability meaning that both members and non-members will now be able to book Tennis & Badminton courts from 10am – 9pm 7 days a week until further notice. The extension represents a marked expansion of Badminton availability and also the addition of weekend Tennis availability without requiring an indoor court induction. However like all changes in the current climate I must stress that this is subject to further notice and could change at any time as the situation develops.

Arrange a Safe Game Facebook Group – Don’t forget that if you’re looking for a safe game of Tennis or Badminton over the next few weeks you can join our special ARC members Facebook group by clicking here.

18/03/2020 - Update

Statement issued by Tom Vinall Centre Manager at 2100 on 18/03/2020

Continued Updates - We have now launched a dedicated Covid-19 update page on our website. Please check this page before travelling to the centre for any form of activity for the latest updates.

Tennis & Badminton Coaching - Following the governments decision to close all schools from Friday 20th March all Tennis & Badminton group coaching will be cancelled from Saturday 21st March onward meaning that the final sessions will take place 5 - 6pm on Friday evening (20/03/20). Any remaining sessions will be credited on the next term of coaching whenever that resumes. All Easter holiday camps will be cancelled with any bookings already made being refunded in the coming days.

Individual coaching sessions will continue to be available with further details on how to book these coming out tomorrow.

Court Booking at ARC - All court booking facilities will continue to be available to both members and non-members for the time being. The Badminton courts have been left down permanently during this period meaning that they will be available to book for our full opening hours.

Arrange a Safe Game Facebook Group - The Government have currently indicated that ‘recreational exercise that takes place at a safe distance from others and in safe exercise environments is something that can continue during this period’. Whilst taking the advice seriously around large gatherings we do feel that arranging small games of Tennis & Badminton can still be a safe activity if simple guidelines are followed; such as keeping these arrangements to a maximum of 4 people, washing hands before and after playing and adhering to the government’s guidelines around social distancing.

We also believe that exercising and keeping active whilst practicing social distancing during this period is important. To help you do this we have created an ‘Arrange A Safe Game Facebook Group’ that members can join if they’d like to find someone to play a game with over the coming weeks. You can join it by clicking here.

North Devon Tennis League - The North Devon Tennis League today announced that ‘all fixtures in the ND Summer Programme are now suspended until further notice’. Likewise the LTA and Badminton England have cancelled all tournaments, events and courses up until the 20th April.

New LTA, BE & SE Advice Pages - Both the LTA, Badminton England and Sport England have now created advice pages on their websites channeling the latest government guidance on Covid-19 and the ways it affects sport and exercise. You can view those pages here:
LTA - Coronavirus page
Badminton England - Coronavirus page
Sport England - Coronavirus page

16/03/2020 - Update

Statement Issued By Centre Manager Tom Vinall at 23:00 on 16/03/20

Dear ARC Members & Users,

In light of the most recent government advice regarding Coronavirus (Covid-19) and in particular the advice to avoid social gatherings we have tonight made the following decisions about upcoming activity at ARC:

Upcoming Events

  •  ‘Share Your Views’ Open Meeting – 17/03/20 6.30pm – Postponed until further notice

  • ACCT Schools Multi-Sport Festival – 19/03/20 10.00am – Postponed until further notice

  • Try Tennis & Badminton for Free Open Day – 21/03/20 – Cancelled

  • Men’s Team Tennis Training Indoor Session – 22/03/20 10.00am - Cancelled

Member Club play Sessions

  • All member club play sessions will be cancelled until further notice. All courts will be made FREE and available to book for members during the usual club play slots but no volunteers will be asked to organise any activity – members are of course still welcome to book courts and play during this time after assessing their own risk.

    - This will include the following sessions: Tennis - Tuesday 6.30 – 9pm, Weds 10 – 12pm, Fri 7 - 9PM. Badminton - Thurs No-Strings 6.30 – 8.30pm, Fri 7 – 9pm.

  • Men’s & Ladies Team Tennis Training (Wednesdays 7 – 9pm, Thursdays 7 – 9pm) – Cancelled.

    - Outdoor courts will be made available to be booked by members for free during these slots.

Coaching Sessions – Kids & Adults

  • All coaching sessions will continue as planned for the final 2 weeks of our term until Saturday 28th March or until the government issues further related advice. We will be asking all players both children and adults to be mindful of social distancing during the sessions and to avoid any close or physical contact with other members of the class. Good hygiene practices including washing hands thoroughly before and after the session will be encouraged.

Until directed otherwise by the government the centre will remain open to both members and non-members for general court use. We are disinfecting all regularly used door handles, surfaces and toilet flushes 3 times daily and have provided hand sanitiser at the entrance to the indoor Tennis & Badminton hall for members & users to use when they arrive and before they leave the centre. We would ask all members and users to please follow government advise and not visit the centre if you are in any way unwell but particularly if you or anyone in your home has a new continuous cough and/or high temperature. Likewise if you become ill shortly after attending the centre please contact Tom Vinall (tom@atlanticracquetcentre.co.uk) as soon as possible so that we can share this info with anyone you may have come into contact with at the centre.

We will review all of the above measures including the cancellation of club play sessions on Saturday 5th April 2020, or as and when the government issues further advise related to any of the above activities.

We’re of course sorry to have to cancel many of our sessions & activities, however the health & safety of our staff, members and users is as always of paramount importance to us.

Please check this page again for more updates in the coming weeks as the situation develops.

Kind Regards,

Tom Vinall
